Abstract

Machine Learning (ML) algorithms increasingly influence decisions in sensitive domains such as healthcare, finance, recruitment, law enforcement, and education. While these systems promise efficiency and accuracy, they also risk perpetuating or amplifying societal biases present in data, design choices, and deployment contexts. Algorithmic bias can lead to unfair outcomes, discrimination against protected groups, and erosion of public trust. This paper examines the sources, types, and impacts of bias in machine learning algorithms and explores contemporary methods for bias detection and fairness optimization. It reviews statistical, algorithmic, and post-processing techniques used to identify and mitigate bias, while highlighting the inherent trade-offs between accuracy, interpretability, and fairness. The paper also discusses ethical, legal, and practical challenges associated with fairness-aware machine learning. The study concludes that fairness is not a one-time technical fix but an ongoing socio-technical process that requires interdisciplinary collaboration, continuous monitoring, and context-sensitive evaluation.
