Abstract

DNA barcoding has emerged as a powerful molecular tool for the identification and classification of animal species, revolutionizing the fields of taxonomy, biodiversity assessment, and wildlife conservation. Traditional methods of species identification often rely on morphological characteristics, which can be difficult to interpret in cases involving cryptic species, juvenile stages, fragmented specimens, or closely related taxa. DNA barcoding overcomes these limitations by using a short, standardized region of genetic material, most commonly the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, to distinguish species accurately and efficiently. the role of DNA barcoding in animal species identification and explores its applications in biodiversity research, ecological monitoring, conservation biology, and forensic investigations. DNA barcoding enables rapid and reliable identification of known species, assists in the discovery of previously unrecognized species, and facilitates the creation of comprehensive genetic reference databases. The technique is particularly valuable in monitoring endangered species, detecting illegal wildlife trade, and assessing ecosystem biodiversity. Despite its numerous advantages, DNA barcoding also faces challenges such as incomplete reference libraries, hybridization, genetic variation within species, and limitations in distinguishing recently diverged taxa. The significance of DNA barcoding as an essential tool in modern zoological research and conservation efforts. The findings emphasize that integrating molecular techniques with traditional taxonomic approaches can greatly enhance species identification, biodiversity documentation, and the effective management of wildlife resources in an era of rapid environmental change.
