The Biotic Contributions in Contemporary Algerian Thought: (Hamdan bin Othman Khouja as a Case Study)

Abstract

The presence of biotic (bioethical) action does not appear to be a modern or contemporary phenomenon. Rather, this practice was widespread long before, even though its theoretical framing is relatively recent. In this article, we focus on one of the most prominent Algerian thinkers who addressed quarantine, also known as quarantine, as one of the biotic practices aimed at social safety. 

Hamdan Khouja sought to criticise ‘pre-modern’ or ‘ignorant’ practices by returning to Islamic heritage and drawing lessons from the health revolution in Western society, which has made significant progress in health and health prevention. Hamdan Khouja’s ultimate goal is to promote health-related practices within Algerian society.
